'Britain in the World':

Your chance to answer the conundrum 'How can we use Britain's role as a key nuclear weapons state to advance our goal of tackling nuclear weapons proliferation ?'

We could all be forgiven for lapsing into despair at the course this Labour Government is following. We've seen it stand by as Bush and his team ditch treaties, develop new weapons, demonise its perceived enemies, all seemingly in frenzied pursuit of domination over the whole universe and all with scarcely a word of criticism from Blair, Straw, Hoon and all. At home they're giving hope to the ailing nuclear power industry with talk of new build stations to achieve reduced carbon emissions. The MOD has given the go ahead for a £2bn investment at Aldermaston which could produce a new generation of mini-nukes. Arms deals - to practically any state, 'rogue' or otherwise who'll buy them - go unchallenged. All the while questions from MPs and constituents are deflected with promises of debate on these issues - 'when the time is right'.
Meanwhile we're hurtling towards war in Iraq. We must seize every chance to stop this catastrophe.

The Labour Party is asking for submissions to its draft policy document 'Britain in the World'. Anyone can send in suggestions, you don't have to be a member of the Labour Party. The 14 pages most relevant to our concerns can be obtained from the Labour Party website: www.labour.org.uk or from West Midlands CND, 54 Allison St., Digbeth, Birmingham B5 5TH ( 0121 643 4617. Email: wmcndall@gn.apc.org

We have summaries and suggestions in the Merseyside CND Office. Your chance for some creative thinking. Send contributions to The Policy Unit, The Labour Party, Millbank London SW1P 4GT. Deadline Oct.3rd.
If you would like to be put on our list of regular letter writers let us know and we'll send you briefing sheets as they arise. Currently Yorkshire CND want us to ask MPs to sign EDM 1279 and the World Court Project wants constituents to write to MPs about the upgrading work at Aldermaston.
