'Britain in the World':Your chance to answer the conundrum 'How can we use Britain's role as a key nuclear weapons state to advance our goal of tackling nuclear weapons proliferation ?'We could all be forgiven for lapsing into despair at the course this
Labour Government is following. We've seen it stand by as Bush and his
team ditch treaties, develop new weapons, demonise its perceived enemies,
all seemingly in frenzied pursuit of domination over the whole universe
and all with scarcely a word of criticism from Blair, Straw, Hoon and
all. At home they're giving hope to the ailing nuclear power industry
with talk of new build stations to achieve reduced carbon emissions. The
MOD has given the go ahead for a £2bn investment at Aldermaston
which could produce a new generation of mini-nukes. Arms deals - to practically
any state, 'rogue' or otherwise who'll buy them - go unchallenged. All
the while questions from MPs and constituents are deflected with promises
of debate on these issues - 'when the time is right'.
