Is War Inevitable?
|
|
Whatever the Weapons Inspectors report on Jan. 27th
all the signs are that President Bush will attack Iraq within a few
weeks and that Tony Blair will back him to the hilt. "US Rules
- UK" the neatly adapted slogan of the 1980s when US Cruise Missiles
were regularly trundling around the British countryside applies to us
now more than ever and America means war. 21 countries bombed by the
US since 1945, 8 international treaties broken since George Bush Jun.
took office and pursuit of the Missile Defence System to achieve US
world dominance, all presage a 21st century of war. But, there is one
big difference now. We in the anti-war movement are not this time in
the minority. Headlines in papers, disquiet among politicians and a
huge turnout at demonstrations on January 18th should encourage us to
keep up the pressure on Bush and Blair. Only a new world order in which
patient negotiation and understanding replace war in tackling the world's
problems can save us from total world chaos. War fuels to chaos.
